GLSN REPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was not surprised that: The 2013 National School Climate Survey was conducted online. To obtain a representative nationalsample of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth, we conducted outreach through national, regional, and local organizations that provide services to or advocate on behalf of LGBT youth, andconducted targeted advertising on the social networking sites, such as Facebook and Reddit. To ensurerepresentation of transgender youth, youth of color, and youth in rural communities, we made specialefforts to notify groups and organizations that work predominantly with these populations. The final sample consisted of a total of 7,898 students between the ages of 13 and 21. Students werefrom all 50 states and the District of Columbia and from 2,770 unique school districts. About two thirdsof the sample (68.1%) was White, slightly less than half (43.6%) was cisgender female, and over halfidentified as gay or lesbian (58.8%). Students were in grades 6 to 12, with the largest numbers in grades10 and 11.

I was surprised that LGBT students who experienced LGBT-related discrimination at school were:- More than three times as likely to have missed school in the past month as those who had not(42.3% vs. 13.8%);- Had lower GPAs than their peers (3.0 vs. 3.3); and- Had lower self-esteem and higher levels of depression.

I was surprised that 60% of transgender students were forced to use the bathroom of their legal sex

Why? I have no idea, that's a good question.

I was surprised that 31% of transgender students were not allowed to wear clothing that fit their identity

I was not surprised that 74.1% of LGBT students were verbally harassed (e.g., called names or threatened) in the past yearbecause of their sexual orientation and 55.2% because of their gender expression

Only 18.5% of LGBT students were taught positive representations about LGBT people, history, orevents in their schools; 14.8% had been taught negative content about LGBT topics.

We should do something!

THIS DOESN'T SURPRISE ME EITHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
