• Gigantism is the medical term and can also be considered the laymen’s term• Gigantism is abnormally large growth due to an excess of growth hormone during childhood, before the bone growth plates have closed.Etiology:o The most common cause of too much growth hormone release is a noncancerous (benign) tumor of the pituitary glando Carney complexo McCune-Albright syndrome (MAS)o Neurofibromatosis

Symptoms: o The child will grow in height, as well as in the muscles and organs. This excessive growth makes the child extremely large for his or her age.o Delayed pubertyo Double vision or difficulty with side (peripheral) visiono Headacheo Increased sweatingo Irregular periods (menstruation)o Large hands and feet with thick fingers and toeso Release of breast milko Thickening of the facial featureso Weakness

Treatment:o In pituitary tumors with well-defined borders, surgery is the treatment of choiceo For situations in which surgery cannot completely remove the tumor, medication is the treatment of choice somatostatin analogs Dopamine agonists Pegvisomanto Radiation therapy can take 5 - 10 years for the full effects to be seen  radiation has been linked to disabilities, obesity, and emotional changes in children. Most experts will use radiation only if surgery and medication fail.Prognosis:This disorder has a good prognosis. Surgery is normally a good way to limit the pituitary tumor and reducing production of excess amounts of hormone growth
