Gertrude was a musical child. she played the cello and the organs.

BiographyGertrude was born on April 16, 1890. She had a sister, Frances and a brother, John. From a very young age she dreampt of being an author. She was a sick child and because of her health, she dropped out of Junior High. She was tutored. She never finsihed school. In 1918 she was begged to teach First Grade because the war. She taught for 32 years. Retired and went to Yale. Gertrude died at 89. She was an author, teacher and a volunteer for the Red Cross and many other charitable organizations.

Gertrude recieved many awards and lots of praise for her series, The Box Cart Children. She has 2 museums in her home town, Putnam, CT.

InterestingsFactsShe taught without getting a degree in teahing. She did get her degree, however after she retired.

Gertrude was a child at heart. She never left her childhood.
