The Process of Germination In Seeds

A class that did a service-based learning activity to restore plant life in which a wildfire destroyed. Students ranging from kindergarten to third grade created seed balls, constructed of clay, compost, and seeds. Because of the conditions of the environment, seed balls would resist factors such as rain and wind because of its ingredients. After seeds have been germinated, the clay and compost would promote plat growth. It is important for studnets to learn the different extrental factors that would restrain a seed to germinate.

The Agriculture of Research Service describes the effects of light on plant germination. External factor can contribute to plant germination. There are externals factors that help the germination process of the seed.

Ways to use germination in the classroom

Garden based learning- The opportunity for students to create their own gardens gives them an opportunity to have real hands on experience. It gives the students an authentic way to learn. Students are able to collect data and really understand the growing process of plants. The students in this class started the germination process in class, then took the plant outside to make a garden.
