Megaselia scalaris was described by the German entolomogist Hermann Loew in 1866. Adult 1-7 mm . To tell there difference with male and female they can tell by there wings. they usually dig 6 feet underground.

COFFIN FLY

Female Coffin fly lays from one to 100 tiny eggs at a time in or on the larval food. She can lay up to 750 eggs in her lifetime. The time it takes from egg to adult varies on the species, but the average is about 25 days.

The male Megaselia scalaris fly matures more quickly than the female pupa, emerging two days prior to the females.
