Geothermal EnergyGeothermal Energy is the energy from heat in the Earth's crust. This heat can be used to generate electricty. Geothermal energy is renewable energy because we can never run out of it.Geothermal Power PlantsGeothermal Power Plants pump heated water (or steam from rock formations) and use the water to power a turbine that is used to generate electricity. This water can be returned, or heated and used again!A geothermal power plant can cost as low as $3400 per kilowatt installed.Geothermal heat pumps uses stable underground temperatures to warm and cool homes. In Summer months, the ground is cooler than the air - the fluid is used to cool homes. During Winter months, the ground is warmer than the air, the fluid is used to warm homes. More than 600,000 homes in the U.S. are heated and cooled using heat pumps.The U.S. is the world's largest producer of geothermal energy. The world's largest geothermal power plant is in California. This power plant provides electricity to 1.7 million households.
