Before George suggested planting peanuts, farmers only grew cotton. Planting the same thing over and over really hurt the land.
There is a museum named after George Washington Carver located in Austin, Texas.
George Washington Carver was born into a world where African-Americans weren't treated fairly, but that didn't stop him from working hard to help others!
He was born a slave in Missouri around 1864.He wasn't a slave for very long! Slavery ended shortly after he was born.He worked really hard to go to school to become a teacher and scientist.

He invented 300 ways to use peanuts, including peanut butter!
He wanted to help farmers grow new things to keep the soil healthy, so he suggested that they start growing peanuts. Farmers didn't think peanuts would sell, until George discovered 300 ways to use peanuts!
