[2014] Saquian Hannah (LupsJuniors6): George Bush

George W. Bush

At the time 9/11 had occured, President Bush was reading "The Pet Goat" to second graders in Emma T. Booker Elementary School in Florida. His blank reaction to the 9/11 attacks have sparked controversy and criticism

9/11 is the group of four terrorist attacks by al-Quaeda in New York City and Washington, D.C.

However, later in an interview, Bush explains what his first thoughts were after being informed about the 9/11 attacks "My first reaction was anger. Who the hell would do that to America? Then I immediately focused on the children, and the contrast between the attack and the innocence of children,'' Bush says in an excerpt of the interview shown to television writers on Thursday.

Immediately following the attacks, President Bush delivered his speech to the country with words or encouragement, his reaction to the attacks, and his thoughts on what should be done. Bush's speech that rallied support for "War on Terrorism" was looked at as one of the difining speeches of his presidency. He took responsibility for leading America through its darkeset moments, saying, "And in our grief and anger, we have found our mission and our moment."

43rd US President (2001-2009)

As words of hope, Bush said in his address to America, "America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining."

Bush made injured civilians his number one priority and to get them medical care. He also wanted to make sure that American citizens in the country and around the world were protected from any further attacks

Bush says, "I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared." This assertion serves as an implication that Bush is heading towards the idea of war.

Bush's Response to 9/11 Attacks:

1) Relief and care was sent for those injured and affected by the 9/11 attacks2)Bush formed a new cabinet-level Department of Homeland Security3) He sent American forces to break up the Taliban 4) He commanded for the invasion of Iraq, thinking that Iraqi president Saddam Hussein posed as a threat to the United States5) In his State of the Union Address in 2005, Bush pledged that he would try to help Iraq form a democratic government, in hopes of gaining an ally in the "war on terror"6) $40 billion disaster bill passed7) He made improvements in the country's intelligence-gathering capabilities - USA Patriot Act - Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act - Protect America Act - Modernization of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act

“I’ve been witness to the character of the people of America, who have showncalm in times of danger, compassion for one another, and toughness for the long haul. All of us have been partners in agreat enterprise.”—President George W. Bush

“The resolve of our great Nation is being tested. But make no mistake: We will show the world that we will pass this test.”President Bush, September 11, 2001
