It was named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world.

The Eiffel Tower is widely considered to be a striking piece of structural art It was created to celebrate the anniversary of the French revolution. In total 50 engineers made 5300 blueprints, 121 workers worked at the construction site to build it and it was the tallest structure in the world until the completion of the Chrysler building in 1930.
