General Zonation

The High Tide ZoneThe zone is also known as the upper mid littoral zone. A couple of organisms that inhabit this zone include limpets, green algae, and lichens. The zone is usually the least submerged out of the 4 zones in the intertidal area.

The Mid Tide ZoneThe zone is also know as the lower mid lttoral zone. A couple of organisms that are found in this zone include crabs clam worms and star fish. The zone is uncovered and covered by water with the tides and is evenly submerged between the 4 zones.

The Spray ZoneThe zone is also known as the the fringe or the upper littoral zone. A few organisms that live in the zone include barnacles and meiofauna. The zone is dry a lot of the day but during high tide the zone will receive water.

The Low Tide ZoneThe zone is also known as the lower littoral zone. A few organisms that inhabit this zone are sea urchins and sea hares. The zone is almost never out of water and when it is it is an unusually low tide.
