Rudasill, Capper, Foust, Callahan, and Albaugh (2009) found that female students care at least 20% more than males until middle school, where math and science get hard. At this point, they found that more girls than not began not trying in these classes and letting them slip because the material had gotten too difficult.

Thesis Statement:Gender bias is taking a toll onfemale students and their self-esteem,as is shown in their sinking academics,how they’re told to grow based ontextbooks, and what they choose todo with their lives.

Gender Bias in Education

Adams, Schoenborn, Moss, Warren, and Kann (1992) found that during adolescence, females are influenced to focus more on their social lives and outward appearance than their academic success, as well as gaining a higher risk of trying, even becoming addicted to drugs and alcohol.

In textbooks, men are described as brave, courageous, independent, and ambitious, while women are described as submissive, weak, irrational, jealous, and only Bearers of the Great, though beautiful. (Sadker & Zittleman (2002))

Teachers, Orick (1993) says, make more eye contact with males, answer questions more thoroughly, give more time to answer, ask more thought-provoking questions, and give more credit for answers than females. They also use male-centric pronouns, like "he" and "man".

Perry & Pauletti (2011) found that young girls experience lower self-esteem and poorer body image greater self-consciousness, and a more fragile self-image than boys. These girls with low self-esteem end up single, divorced, working dead end jobs and making much less than their male counterparts.

To help eliminate feelings of inadequacy in girls, parents, teachers, and social culture alike should try to diminish the importance of "girl" things and "boy" things. Every child should be encouraged to pursue their own interests, without the fear of being ridiculed for liking something outside of theri traditional gender role.

While researching on this topic, I learned a lot of things that I never would have though of. I never really cared about gender roles because I've always studied what was interested to me, but I found that a lot of girls feel inadequate. I did hours of research and stayed up many a night to find out everything that I could about gender bias. It sucked at times, because I ended up not being able to have fun, but researching this gave me a new outlook on the discrimination that children face.

Perry & Pauletti (2011)This research was probably one of the most influential on the outlook of my paper becuase it was written pretty recently. It really discussed the way that females feel about themselves in regards to how they feel about the boys around them, and how this affects their futures.

Zittleman & Sadker (2002)This was probably my favorite study because it seemed to take the most time to put together. The researchers searched textbooks from several countries and went through the pictures, the authors, and every article to determine the statistics of gender bias in educational textbooks.

Adams, Schoenborn, Moss, Warren, and Kann (1992)This study was useful in my research because of the use of examples and how they really relate to female self-esteem.

Rudasill, Capper, Foust, Callahan, and Albaugh (2009)This study was really, really interesting becuase it showed the effects of gender bias as something more than "trouble ahead". It really went in depth WHY girls become disinterested in STEM fields.

Orick (1993)This speech was very charged, but factual. It had an emotional appeal that the other studies just didn't.
