The Good

Gatorade or Water?

Does Gatorade affect running performances?

The Bad

Everyone needs 10-15 cups of water a day. Also, after running, you must drink more water for how much you lost through sweat. Weigh yourself before and after you run to determine how much fluid you lose through sweating during your run. Drink 16 ounces of water for each pound that you lost.. You can replenish your fluids and electrolytes by drinking water or any sports drink such as Gatorade. With drinking water be sure to also consume a source of sodium and some carbohydrates to replace your losses.Drinking water is better for runs lasting less than 60-90 minutes. Water is a better choice for meeting your general daily fluid needs because it is calorie and sugar-free. Studies have proven for an average athlete there are no significant benefits from drinking Gatorade or any other sports drink as compared to water. This concludes that most individuals already ingest a sufficient amount of salt and carbohydrates in their diet to replenish what they might have lost in a 60-90 minute runs. As for extreme athletes they'll naturally lose more water and salt than they can make up for in their diet. To balance the larger amounts lost, they can benefit from the added nutrients in Gatorade and other sports drinks. Gatorade is highly necessary in longer runs to prevent a dangerous overhydration. If an extreme athlete only consumes water than he/she will suffer with overhydration and gastrointestinal problems. Gatorade contains sodium to help maintain electrolyte balance and help prevent your sodium levels from dropping too much.

There are many cons to Gatorade. One specific con is the food dye in the delicious drinks. Many junk foods will consist of one or many of the same types of colors such as Yellow (5&6), Red (3&10&40), Blue (1&2), Green 3, and Orange B. As for Gatorade, the drinks do have these colored dyes and the dyes can be dangerous. For athletes, they want what's good for their health but studies show that many of these dyes link to brain tumors, bladder cancer, allergic reactions, and cancer of the adrenal glands and kidneysthyroid tumors. Also, Gatorade is accused of affecting the behavior of children. The drinks consist with more than 1/3 of colored dyes.

Although Gatorade is good to sustain energy and prevent dehydration, it also helps prevent muscle cramps with providing potassium that was lost during a run.Potassium is beneficial for regulating blood pressure, muscle control and nerve functions. During exercise and physical activity, your body burns off potassium in the muscles and some is also lost through sweat. Gatorade helps to replenish potassium stores and prevent muscle cramping during exercise.
