Galileo Galilei
(1564-1642) Galileo was an italian, astronomer, physicist, mathematician, engineer, and philosopher. Galileo believed that mathematics was the "language of the world around us", whether it is the behavior of planets and pendulums, or the fundamentals of music and mechanics – all could be understood using mathematics.
His father persuaded him into learning medicine, but Galileo soon found out that he wasn't interested. Instead he was more interested in math. So he got a tutor and got private lessons but still continued to pursue a degree in medicine.
Galileo paid a high price for his science: he spent the last eight years of his life under house arrest, and the Catholic Church banned the publication of anything written by him.
