Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei was born on Febuary 15, 1564 in Pisa, Italy. He died on January 8, 1642. Galileo was a physicist, mathematician, engineer, astronomer and philosopher.

"Galileo Galilei was the first astronomer to use a telescope to study the heavens." (Galileo.) In 1610, Galileo Galilei published the Starry Messenger, an astronomical pamphlet that was based on observations mad through a telescope. Galileo significantly improved upon telescopes. "Galileo used his telescope to show that Venus went through a complete set of phases, just like the Moon." (Galileo: The Telescope & The Laws of Dynamics) He was the first figure to see craters on the moon, discover sunspots, and see the four largest moons of Jupiter.

Galileo's observations confirmed Copernicus' hypothesis that the sun was the center of the universe and that the planets revolved the sun.
