The Galapagos Islands are an ecotourist's dream! Volcanic activity, access to three different ocean currents, and geological isolation created a perfect recipe for unique wildlife. Galapagos is a UNESCO World Heritage site as 97% of the land and its countless numbers of endemic species are protected by Galapagos National Park. Father of evolution, Charles Darwin, utilized the biodiversity of the island to support his evolution theory.

Belonging to the country of Ecuador, the 4,900 sq. miles of archipelago boasts 13 main islands, of which 5 are inhabited by its 40,000 residents. Galapagos also receives about 160,000 tourists a year. Scientists estimate that the islands were formed between 3 to 5 million years ago by volcanic activity which makes the islands young in relation to other land masses. Over the past 200 years, there have been approximately 50 volcanic eruptions from which cooled lava has created more land mass.
