1689-1763

The French and Indian War was the name given to the American part of a massive war involving Great Britain, Austria, England, France, Sweden, and Prussia called the Seven Years War. The war was fought in Europe, India, and North America. In Europe, France was allied with Sweden and Austria to stop the rising power of Frederick the Great, King of Prussia. The English and the French battled for control of land in North America, the Caribbean, and in India. The English finally won the colonial lands, but at a cost so huge that the debt from it nearly destroyed the English government. England wanted the coloniest to help pay this bill, causing the rise of tensions leading up to the Revolutionary War. The Seven Years War was ended with the signing of the Treaty of Paris.
