The Freedom Riders were civil rights activist that rode interstate buses into the segregated southern united states in 1961
The Freedom Riders were inspired by the journey of reconciliation in 1947. The First Freedom ride began on May 4, 1961.

The new policies went into effect November 1st, 1961. Passengers were allowed to sit where ever they wanted. Signs stating race ie. white, colored were removed from the terminals.
