Fredrick Douglass

The Problem: He didn’t know how to read or write so he started thinking for himself making his master rent him out to Mr. Covey, a farmer with a reputation as a "slave-breaker." After Douglass was “broken” by Mr.Covey he was too exhausted to think and too beaten physically to complain or fight back.

What did the person do to change the problem? While Fredrick Douglass reached the depths of despair, he looked out onto the Chesapeake Bay and saw the white sails of ships sailing free and while he was questioning why he couldn't be free too, he started to take courage and resolved to free himself, no matter what the obstacles may be.

This is the newsletter that Mr. Douglass started on his own. It was called the North Star and was about anti-slavery.

Quote: I didn't know I was a slave until I found out I couldn't do the things I wanted to.- Fredrick Douglass

What was the effect of this person’s effort? The effect was how people began to realized the importance of education even for the colored children and began to speak out about it.
