Franklin Delano Roosevelt

"The only we have to fear is fear itself!"

Franklin Delano Roosevelt delivers his most famous speech after the Japanese attacks on Pearl Harbor.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!"

WW2 Contributions

Before officially entering World War 2, Roosevelt issued the Atlantic Charter, an agreement with Churchill and the United Kingdom. The Charter stated the ideal goals of the war: restoration of self-government to those deprived of it; abandonment of the use of force, as well as disarmament of aggressor nations. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, (see video) America officially declared war on Japan, Germany, and Italy, respectively. The US campaigns began in North Africa, then moved to Sicily and Italy. On June 6, 1944 the Normandy, or D-Day invasion occurred. From here, Allied troops moved throughout Western Europe at a swift pace. The war ended in Europe on May 1st when Germany officially surrender. Despite this, the Pacific theatre of the war was not won. The Japanese had no intention of surrendering, despite losing almost all of their conquered territory. World War 2 as a whole was finally won by the Allies after the United States dropped 2 atomic bombs on Japanese industrial centers. The Japanese soon surrendered.
