Francis Drake

Francis Drake was born around 1540-1544 and died in1596.

Francis Drake was from Tavistock, Devonshire, England.He started as an apprentice fora merchant, then gave interestfor navigation.

He landed in California becauseof a storm. Francis captured a Spanish ship full ofgold and jewels and then he got caught in a storm.

When he was 23 he made his first voyage to America. In 1570 and 1571 he made two tripsto the West Indies. He explored the Caribbean Sea while raiding treasure ships in 1572.

In 1577 he started an expedition against the Pacific Coast of America which he canceled due to the bad wheather. He suffered great attrition due to the loss of men during the Atlantic Crossing too. Francis lost one of his ship going to South America.

Francis drake was the firstEnglishman to sail around the world. He sank much of the Spanish Navy in the port of Cadiz. He was vice admiral ofthe fleet that defeated the Spanish Armada. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth as 'Sir Francis Drake'on April 4th, 1581.
