Food in Slovakia

Mountainous area are best for breeding sheep and goats. That´s why there are many sheep farms in Slovakia. Traditional sheep farms were located far away from villages, shepherds who worked on these farms, stayed there from spring to automn, isolated from other people and created their own culture. From sheep milk they produced bryndza (creamy sheep cheese), žinčica (whey) and oštiepok (smoked sheep). Bryndza is used for making Slovak national dish, bryndzové halušky – something like gnocchi with bryndza and smoked bacon. You can also use bryndza for filling potato dumplings .Potato dumplings are often served with žinčica (whey) . For breakfast you can have bryndzová natierka – bryndza spread on toast or bread.
