Five Pillars

Muslims must declare "there is no god but God; Muhammad is the messenger of God." This declarationo f faith defines a oerson as a mamber of the Islamic community.

All Muslims who have reached puberty, are ill, or traveling are requried to fast during the month of Ramadan. this fast reminds the Muslims to care for the needy. Fasting in the Islamic faith means to abstain from food, drink, and sexual relations from sunrise until sunset.

Muslims give must give to the needy as a form of worship. All financially stable Muslims are required to give 2.5% of their earnings to the needy.

Muslims are to pray 5 times a day, facing Mecca. Between dawn and sunrise, after mid-day, between late afternoon and sunset , between sunset and the end of daylight, and night until dawn. They must cleanse themselves before their prayer and worship.

A pilgrimage to the holy land, Mecca, is required once in a person's lifetime. The rituals reflect the rituals performed by Abraham. If a person is to die on the pilgrimage, the are to be considered a martyr.
