On September 20th, 1519, Ferdinand Magellan set sail from Sanlucar de Barrmeda to circumnavigate the world. He had 270 crew members on 5 ships with him. They sailed through the strait of South America. It took 38 days to pass through! The conditions of the ship were unbearable, And the weather grew colder and colder as they traveled. They had no food, so they ate rats, sawdust, and leather strips from the sails

Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to circumnavigate the world. He also has a strait named after him. (The strait of Magellan.) While they were sailing they came upon peaceful waters. He decided that he would name it the Pacific Ocean. Pacific is the Spanish word for peaceful.
