Famous Discoverer

A sextant is doubly reflecting navigation instrument used to measure the angle between any two visible objects. The primary use of sextant is to determine the angle between an astronomical object and the horizon for the purposes of celestial navigation (finding longtitude and latitude).

The Tools of Exploration

The cross-staff consisted of a long staff with a perpendicular vane which slides back and forth upon it. The staff is marked with graduated measurements, calculated by trigonometry. The angles can then be measured by holding it so the ends of the vane are level with the points to be measured.

The Chronometer is a clock, that was used at the sea, to determine longitude. It was made of brass, so it will still work in the moist and rough environment. Sailors could find their longtitude by comparing the present time to another time at a known longtitude.
