George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, in Westmoreland County, Virginia. At the age of 20, George was appointed a major in the Virginia militia. At the age of 23, Washington was made commander of all Virginia troops. In 1758, Washington resigned his commission and returned to Mount Vernon. He married Martha Dandridge Custis, a rich widow with two children. From his retirement from the Virginia militia, George devoted himself to the care and development of his land and livestock. Washington became a delegate to the First Continental Congress in March 1775. In 1775, George became Major General and Cammander-in-Chief of the colonial forces. In 1783, he resigned as Commander-in-Chief, and tried to go back to his farm life. George Washington was elected first president in 1789. He was the only president in American history to be elected by unanimous approval. Washington served two terms as president, and in 1797, he composed his Farewell Address to the American people. He returned to his plantation to work the land. In December 1799, George became ill and died on December 14th, 1799.
