Have you ever had the feeling that you were a legend. Well, Jakie Robinson has. He was the first African American to play on a Minor and Major league in baseball, a white mans game. Most importantly in 1947 he broke the colour barrier so african americans everywhere could be given the chance to play major league ball. But Robinson took a rough path to get to where he was playing major league ball...
Robinson was born on January 21, 1919 in Cairo, Georgia. Jackie was encouraged to play sports with his brothers being professional athletes. In John Muir High School, Robinson played several different sports such as track, football, and baseball. He looked up to his brother, Mack, being in the 1963 Olympics. His other brother Frank, encouraged Jackie to go farther in his athletes carrier.
Robinson then graduated to Pasadena Junior College where he continued being an athlete. But an incident had happened; Jackie was arguing with an officer and then was sentenced to 2 years in prison. Towards the end of his sentence he was given word that his brother, Frank, had died in a motorcycle accident. When he got out of prison, Jackie wanted to be a professional athlete. And he did this all for Frank. Robinson enrolled to UCLA playing four sports and being the first athlete to win multiple varsity letters. But Jackie was concentrated on his baseball carrier. He wasn't the worst but wasn't the best and he knew that he could of done a better job in his baseball carrier.
In 1946 Jackie was on the Montreal Royals Minor league for baseball all his work had paid off and he was the FIRST African American to be on a baseball team in history, but in 1947, he broke another colour barrier by playing for a MAJOR league team, the Brooklyn Dodgers! Finally, all of Jackie's work had paid off and teams started hiring Africans like the Dodgers had done. On January 5, 1957 Robinson retired after playing base ball for at least a decade but had treasured all memories.
Sadly, on October 24, 1972 Jackie Robinson had died from diabetes. But today we all still remember him as a role model. He is very important to Canada because he was the very first African American to play on a Canadian team. His life example teaches us that it doesn't matter what colour you are, what religion you are, we are all unique but if you push yourself you could fulfill your dreams. Never let others put you down, because if you work hard your dream will come true.
