Facts from 1800-1850

1803 president Jefferson purchased territory from the French government for $15 million. The purchase was called the Lousiana Purchase.

The Lousiana Purchase expanded from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and from Canada to New Orleans. Overall it doubled the size of the United States.

The Westward Expansion of the United States is one of the defining themes of the 19th-century American history.

Settlers moving West took a variety of major routes from which most started in Missouri. The trails were the Oregon trail, Mormon trail, Santa Fe trail, and California trail.

By 1840, nearly 7 million Americans-40% of the nations population- lived in the trans-Appalachian West.
