Evidence For Evolution

Fossils provide a dimension of time to study previous life. For many years fossils have been used to observe previous life forms and figure out where and when they lived. Through relative and numerical dating we can figure out what time period the animal was alive. Relative dating is a process where the fossils depth in the earth determines the time period it lived in. Numerical dating uses radioactivity to figure out the age of the fossil. Some fossils look similar to species today becuase todays animals are descendants of the fossils.

Vestigial structures are parts of a structure that used to have a purpose, but are no longer needed. Proving that the species has evolved and was better off without that function. A homologous structure is when two species have a similar body structure because they have decended from a common ancestor. Variations of the original species proves that evolution took place. Embryology is finding homologous structures while it is still in embryotic form. The young structures can devolop in similar ways with similar structures, which probably means they share a common ancestor. Analogous structures are similar looking species that have not decended from a common ancestor. Totally different species evolved in a similar way due to the will to survive. Phylogenetics is a process to find similarities through morphological and molecular data. Phylogenetic trees can be created and we can figure out how species are related. Cladistics is when species are grouped together based on one similarity and their relationship is hypothesised based on the group of species.

Pangea and Plate Tectonics

All of the seprate continents that we know used to be one massive super continent called Pangea. The huge land separated due to plate tectonics. This is the theory that earth is divided into multiple plates. The plates moved and this caused the separation of the land masses. Pangea and its movement can be proved by biogeography, which is the study of the distribution of species and ecosystems. The enviornment changed when the land split up, causing evolution to take its course.

Natural and Artificial Selection

Natural selection is a gradual process where heritable biological traits become more or less common in a population. The change in traits is called an adaptation and the driving force behind the adaptations is survival of the fittest. Fitness is the ability to survive and reproduce. The most suitable animals to thier enviornment will survive, so animals will add new and get rid of unuseful traits in order to be more fit. Artificial selection, also known as selective breeding, is when a human chooses certain animals to breed based on their traits. Normally the best traits would be picked, creating a more fit species.
