Every Day

every day by david levithan

My Rating: 8/10

In this realistic fiction novel, A, a soul without a permanent body, wakes up each day embodying someone different than the day before. On the day that starts the story, he inhabits the body of Justin and falls in love with his girlfriend Rhiannon. The rest of every day follows A's attempts to maintain a relationship with Rhiannon, even though every day he sees her his appearance differs, with no limits on race or gender. This novel made me consider how I define identity and question how much I rely on outward appearance in my understanding of a person.

Kindness connects to who you are, while niceness connects to how you want to be seen (56).

If you want to live within the definition of your own truth, you have to choose to go through the initially painful and ultimately comforting process of finding it (253).

Favorite Quotes

Email is one of the ways A stays grounded to his identity. His inbox helps him archive others' lives he has lived, and A also uses email to correspond with Rhiannon and Nathan, a boy who, after A spent a day in his body, thought he had been possessed by the devil and wants to expose A. The clock also dictates A's life. If he is not asleep by midnight, he is painfully "torn" from whatever body he inhabited that day so he can wake up in a new one the next day.

Other Main Characters: Rhiannon - a high school girl with whom A falls in love; tries to make their relationship workJustin - Rhiannon's boyfriend, whose body A wakes up in at the start of the novel; doesn't treat Rhiannon wellNathan - another boy A inhabits; thinks he was possessed by the devil and tries to track A down
