Character Info:Esperanza Ortega- A 13 year old girl who was wealthy all her life. After her father was murdered and her house was burned down, she, her mother, and her servants were forced to move to a farm in California.Miguel- The son of Hortensia and Alfonso. He grew up with Esperanza because of the fact that his family and him were her servants. He prefers to work on the farm in America because of the chance of having more opportunities.

Theme: Those who fall today can rise to the top tomorrow.
Conflict: The conflict of the story is that Esperanza must learn to adjust to life as a lower-class farm worker after her beautiful, lavish home in Mexico was burned down.
Esperanza's favorite flower was the rose.
Mood: Inspirational. Esperanza's overcoming of her adversities helps make her an emotionally and mentally stronger person. This can show the reader that no matter how hard life seems to be, we can overcome the tough times.
Point of View: Third person limited. The narrator only has acesses to Esperanza's thoughts.
Setting(s): Arvin, California and Aguascalientes, Mexico during the Great Depression.
Climax: The climax of the story is when Esperanza decides to make a change in her life for the better. She begins taking care of her mother and begins being nice to all the people on the farm.
