Language featuresMeg McKinlay uses alliteration and repetition as a means to convey the feelings and experiences that Tessa and Zachary have. The extensive use of adjectives is also evident.The repetitive use of "machine" and the associated adjectives is effective in imparting their attachment to "the machine". "The machine" is described as "clean", "green", "shiny", "excellent" and "fast", each description increasing the reader's appreciation and understanding of its value. Similarly, by referring to the machine as "chuggy" and "spluttery" in addition to its omission in the latter part of the text, the reader can appreciate a change in the attitudes of the children. The use of alliteration assists the reader to create a strong mental image. By describing "the machine" as "smooth and swift and splendiferous"(p.4) in comparison to the walk to school as "hot","hilly" and "horrible" (p.8), the reader develops an understanding of the attitudes and values held by the children. Their discovery of "fabulous fish and feathers...surprising stones and shells...beautiful birds and baubles" (p.15) conveys a sense of wonder and excitement as the journey to school progresses.

Quality children's literature is that which is meaningful, useful, aesthetically pleasing and has the capacity to increase understanding and knowledge, particularly in relation to emotions, relationships, thoughts and ideas. (Bruce & Spratt, 2011). Ten tiny things (McKinlay,2012) is a text rich in aesthetic quality. It has the potential to encourage children to consider their choices from an environmental, physical and emotional benefits perspective.

Use of colour is a strong visual element within this text. The background of each page is coloured in hues of brown, green and grey, giving a very earthy feel to the story. The initial pages of the text present the “machine” as the focus of the reader’s attention- a bold, shiny and green machine in an otherwise mundane setting. Perspective is provided through the eyes of the children. Use of circles also provide a telescopic view, enabling the reader to focus on Tessa and Zachary.The illustrator conveys the feelings of annoyance at the machine’s breakdown by the use of jagged lines as the children imagine the hilly walk. The hill they climb is coloured black which is also suggestive of their dreaded anticipation.As the children are driven home from school,the visual text depicts a sense of whizzing past the wonderful things to be seen. This is implied by the use of horizontal lines which taper off, suggesting the machine is travelling at speed. The illustrator uses causality to provide a sense of time as the children walk past a leafy green tree and again a bare tree while they are dressed in warm clothing.

Identify language that can be used for appreciating texts and the qualities of people and things (ACELA1462).The text will be introduced and read to the students. Following this, students will be asked to listen again, this time for the words that describe what the children felt about the machine, the walk to school and their observations. There will be an emphasis on using the visual and written text. Students will share their responses and the teacher will write them up on a chart.

From the list, students will be asked if there are any patterns in the language used. Encourage and facilitate discussion as to what the purpose of these patterns is. Are the patterns helpful? Why or why not?

    Hi Steph,
    Lovely glog which visually links to themes of text. Loved the youtube clip - great to out a face to the name and beautiful presentation of themes. Could not access any book reading though, only some very lovely bird song.
