Erwin Schodinger

Erwin SchödingerAugust 12, 1887 - January 4, 1961

- Lived in Vienna, Austria - Got his PhD at the age of 23 - A crater on the moon is named after him - Tried to unify phisics with genetics - Had an Irish passport - Against the prosecution of Jews - Wrote his greates work in the hospital (suffered from Tuberculosis many times)

Fun Facts

Schödinger's Cat

Schrödinger's Famous experiment, Schödinger's Cat, is a cat enclosed in a box with a radioactive source and a poison that will be released when the source (unpredictably) emits radiation, the cat is considered (according to quantum mechanics) to be simultaneously both dead and alive until the box is opened and the cat observed. (1935)

Major Contributions

- Founded the wave mechanics - Developed the Schrodinger Equation (1925) - Wrote a book called “What is Life?” (1944) - Schödinger's Cat (1935)

The Schrödinger equation is the fundamental equation of physics for describing quantum mechanical behavior. It is also often called the Schrödinger wave equation.

Schrödinger's Equation

What is Life?

In the book, Schrödinger introduced the idea of an "aperiodic crystal" that contained genetic information in its configuration of covalent chemical bonds. In the 1950s, this idea stimulated enthusiasm for discovering the genetic molecule and would give both Francis Crick and James Watson initial inspiration in their research

Other Scientists

- James Clerk Maxwell - Ludwig Boltzmann - Arthur Schopenhauer - Baruch Spinoza

- Nobel Prize in Physics - Erwin Schrödinger Prize - Max Planck Medal
