Advent in Deutschland

01/12/09Dear Diary, Preparations are underway and Adventszeit has begun! Advent here in Germany is in some ways very similar to Advent back in Australia, but very different at the same time. The Christmas season officially began today, four Sundays before Christmas. For the next four weeks, everyone will be kept very busy making all the preparations for Christmas. My host family and I have begun to make decorations for the house and trees, send cards and make calls wishing family & friends we won’t be seeing a merry Christmas, or as they say, Frohe Weihnachten! When I arrived, I was given an Adventskalender. It has 24 small windows which I will open one each day from today, all the way up to Christmas Eve. When I was out shopping, I kept seeing these horizontally placed wreaths, with four candles. I asked Julia what they were and she told me that they are special Adventskranz, which are displayed in schools, shopping centres, houses and churches with the first candle being lit on the first Sunday after November 26th, then the second on the next Sunday, then the third on the Sunday after, and then the fourth is lit on Christmas Eve. I better go now, we’re about to begin the Christmas baking!Tschüss, Jennah x
