English Exploration of South Carolina

"There must be a beggining of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end yields the true glory."- Sir Francis Drake

English Explorationof South Carolina

Roanoke was England's first attempt at establishing a colony in America. The first attempt failed, but a few years later in 1585 they tried again. This attempt included 115 men, woman, and children. When the supply ship returned to the colony, nobody was to be found. All that was left was the word "Croatoan." Still today, nobody knows what really happened at Roanoke.

Roanoke "Lost Colony"

Charles TownCharles Town was founded by the English settlers. It was previously occupied by Spain, but was abandoned by Spain because of lack of supplies. England found the abandoned colony in the 1660's. Charles Town thrived and is now what is present day Charlestown.
