Literacy actually encompasses a very wide range of things. These include: Digital, Computer, Media, Information, Technology, Political, Cultural, Multicultural, Visual, Global, Functional, etc. Literacy could be defined as a type of skill that reflects the needs of the time, as those needs shift, then our definition of literacy shifts as well.

WHAT EXACTLY IS LITERACY ?

What kinds of things motivate students to practice literacy?-The topic needs to be one that they feel is important to communicate about.-Topic needs to be something they feel strongly about or are interested in.-Reading and writing needs to take place when they want to do it. -They feel competent wih the language, topic, or genre.-Authentic opportunities for feedback and practice are present.

Project Based Learning

Reasons that motivation doesn't transfer into the school setting-Out of school literacy skills may not be school appropriate.-Teachers start to assume that because students won't read and write that they cannot read and write so that gap is never closed between school and home. -Academic reading and writing is not very interesting.-Some teacher's don't have the expertise to provide reading and writing instruction if it is outside of English.

Simple Strategies to Engage Students-Connect to student's lives-Create a safe and responsive classroom where students are acknowledged.-Have students interact with texts and with eachother simultaneously.

Confidence is Key

Definition:“a systematic teaching method that engages students in learning essential knowledge and life enhancing skills through an extended, student-influenced inquiry process structured around complex, authentic questions and carefully designed products and tasks.”

7 Steps to maximize learning potential using PBL1. Give students more voice and choice.2. Localize the project.3. Keep it real- draw from the student's lives, cultures, identities, etc. 4. Launch the project with an entry event (It shouldn't feel like just another boring assignment).5. Emphasize commitment to team.6. Involve outsiders (Others in the community that can benefit the project).7. Present finished product to a public audience.

GradingBecause students are evaluated on the basis of their projects rather than on the comparatively narrow rubrics defined by exams, assessment of project-based work is often more meaningful. Students quickly see how academic work can connect to real-life issues.
