What ARE the schools feeding our children?

Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act

Vending machines provided at school give easy access to low nutritional valued foods and sugary beverages. They not only interrupt student learning, but they can alter the mental state of students resulting in missed learning opportunities. "The dispensers, which are around in 95% of secondary schools, will be re-stocked with milk, fruit water and other healthy foods" (Hope).

Meals contain grains, meats, vegetables and fruits. These requirements prove nothing but beneficial to children's lives. "Across the whole spectrum of kids what we're seeing... is a slowing down and stabilization of obesity rates" (Liptak).

The act increases more universal meal access for eligible students in high poverty communities. It is crucial that no child is denied a meal even if they cannot provide the money needed. "When the overnight fast is extending, the gradual decline among the metabolic changes could determine a stress response that interferes with different aspects of cognitive function" (Pollitt).

Keep us healthy!
