Childhood ' Personal Life
- Following the onset of Franklin's polio in 1921, Eleanor began serving as a stand-in for her incapacitated husband, making public appearances on his behalf- Got involved in a lot of charity work with organization such as The Red Cross, Women Trade Union League, National Consumer's League, and the New York State League of Women Voter's- Even though FDR cheated on her, she stayed with him to not tarnish his reputation with the public and their family life
- Was very reluctant to take the First Lady position at first- She redefined the First Lady Role from a White House hostess to a powerful political role- She was the first presidential spouse to hold press conferences and in 1940 became the first to speak at a national party convention- She held 348 press conferences in the 12 year span and would often host press conferences for only women reporters- She brought in an average of $76,000 between 41'-44' (Beasley 84)

- Was appointed as a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly by Harry S. Truman in 1945- She was the first chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights-She helped to write the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; an effort that she considered to be her greatest achievement.-President Kennedy also appointed Eleanor chair of the Commission on the Status of Women in 1961
- Niece of Theodore Roosevelt, and distant cousing of FDR- Her parents died at a very young age- She was very shy as a child- At boarding school, she befriended a liberal minded atheist and lesbian named Marie Souvestre- Had 6 children- She had a very close relationship with a with a New York State Police sergeant, Earl Miller, who was assigned as a bodyguard for her- She was also very close with Amelia Earhart
