Emmett Till

Emmett TillAugust 28, 1955

Emmett Till was a fourteen year-old black boy from Chicago, Illinois, born on July 25, 1941. Till went to visit some relatives in Leflore County, Mississippi. Till and some relatives went to church in Money Mississippi, where his great uncle preached. Him and a few relatives of Till's went with him during the church service to a little grocery store in Money to get chewing gum. This grocery store was the Bryant Grocery & Meat Market. The owner of this store, his wife was working the cash register, and as Till walked out of the grocery store, he whistled at the store owners wife.

Till didn’t think of the consequences that he had caused but his relatives had, and as soon as he walked out the door, the relatives made a run for it and made Till come along with them. On August 28,1955,at approximately 2:30 A.M , Roy Bryant(store owner), J.W. MIlam and at least one other guy, appeared at the house of Mose Wright(Emmett Till’s great uncle.) These three men knocked on the door of Moses’ house looking for the boy that “did the talking,”(Emmett Till) in Money four days earlier, and abducted him from the house.

Following the abduction of Emmett Till, Roy Bryant, and J.W. Milam were arrested by the Leflore County Sheriff's Department and was charged with kidnapping. On August 31, 1955, a naked body presumed to be Till’s,was floating in a section of the Tallahatchie River, running along the border between Tallahatchie and Leflore Counties. Upon the discovery of the body and its subsequent identification of Emmett Till, Roy and J.W. were indicted on charges of murder in Tallahatchie County(Emmett Till).

The murder of Emmett Till and the killings of many colored people today, still get shot and beaten for the reasons Till did in 1955. There is no difference from 1955 to now because most people still believe that it’s all the colored people's fault. Us as white people and especially white police officers will get blamed for anything that has to do with a white and colored person. We believe it is the colored people’s faults, and they believe it is our fault, but that’s not always the correct way to handle violent cases. Just as Till didn’t mean to do any harm to Carolyn Bryant, he still lost his life for really a non life-threatening act towards a white woman.

As today, really in white police officers, they will shoot a colored person just because they had a gun on them, or something appears to be a gun, but there are many white people that carry guns with them and wouldn’t shoot them. Personally I think we as white people shouldn’t think badly of the opposite color. I mean yes if you have to act on them to save your life, then do it, but if you just shoot them because they were “acting” on you and they really weren’t that’s a sign of racism. Racism is something we see everywhere in our lives today, just like Emmett lost his life due to a act of racism.
