In 500-1400 plain song was a popular kind of music (monks singing without music) Modes were used in both sacred and secular music. Instruments were lutes, recorders, nakers, shawms and hurdy gurdys.

The renaissance age was when the catholic church lost its there was more dancing involved. Instruments included bagpipes, dulcian, harpsichord.

The classical Time period placed a greater stress on clarity with regard to melodic expression and instrument color. Instruments were the flute, violin, viola, and the basson.

The piano replaced the harpsichord in the romantic time period

20th century music got more personal and is characterized by human progress and innovation However the Romantic time period had a variety of music and music was intensley emotive and more personal.

The french influence the Baroque time period of great growth however after Bach died so did this age. Opera, religious and instrumental sonatas were populars kinds of music.
