Emerald Ash Borer

An agency that is involved in controlling the emerald ash borer is the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). CFIA has an awareness program for the public. Their goal is to reduce the risk of people bringing in infested wood from other areas. CFIA has mounted many signs around parks and large areas with dense trees. They have an alert website used to educate people about this issue. They also have a replacement tree program, where they check trees that might be infested, remove them, and replace them with new healthy trees. These small actions have benefited the ecosystem, by keeping the ecosystem balanced. It is helping the growth of the animals and insects that live in these trees. By replacing the trees the animals have to make an adjustment but they are still able to continue their role in the ecosystem, and make sure that one species doesn’t over populate.(4)

The emerald ash borer's original habitat is Asia. In Asia, the borer is also destructive and causes damage to many ash trees. But in Asia, the amount of damage the borer does to the ash trees is much less because it has a predator. Woodpeckers that live in the same area as the emerald ash borer, wait for the visual cues, like damaged trees with holes in the bark. The woodpecker waits outside of an opening then, eats the emerald ash borer larvae. (6)

The emerald ash borer is successful in Canada because it has no predators. Also, native ash trees have limited resistance to attack.

A full-grown emerald ash borer has a sparkly emerald or dark metallic coloured body. It has large, black kidney shaped eyes, and a narrow body around 8 - 14 mm long. Emerald ash borers tend to live in the rough, deep, crevices of the bark of the ash trees.(7)

The emerald ash borer is native to Asia and Eastern Russia, and was unintentionally brought over to Canada by humans, through the shipment of ash wood. The emerald ash borers lay their eggs in the rough parts of the tree bark, and branches. So when the wood arrived in Canada, the eggs hatched, and emerald ash borers began to damage the ecosystem.(5)

Ash wood is very important resource because it is very a hard and strong wood compared to other woods like maple. Ash wood is commercially used for flooring, furniture, sports equipment, tool handles and many other products. (7)

The emerald ash borer’s larvae plant themselves into the tree bark. It feeds on the tree’s conductive tissue. This tissue is what moves the nutrients and water from the roots to the leaves. Once disturbed, the water and nutrients can no longer travel to the leaves, so the tree begins to die. Once the tree dies, all native ash species become at risk. (5)
