Elephants

Asian elephants have four toes on the back foot and five toes on the front foot, but African elephants have three toes on the back foot and five toes on the front foot. An elephants lifespan is about 70 years. The female is in gestation for about 22 monthes, the longest of any mammal. A female has a baby every 4-5 years. Baby elephants stay with their mothers for many years before leaving them.

African elephants range throught sub-Saharan Africa and the rainforests of central and and west Africa. Elaphants need a large amount of food and water to live.

Habitat

~The biggest land mammal on earth is the African elephant, it weighs up to 8 tons. ~All African elephants, even females, have tusks~ Baby elephants are called calves.

Facts

Elephants are herbivores. Elephants eat grass, leaves, bamboo, bark, roots, bananas, fruit and sugarcane. Adult elephants will eat 300-400 pounds of food per day.
