Elephantitis

Elephantiasis is a condition where the skin thickens and hardens after excessive swelling associated with lymph accumulation (lymphedema). It is most marked in the lower limbs but also commonly affects the scrotum in males, and may also affect the breasts and arms.

General treatment includes bed rest, elevation of affected limbs and wrapping the limbs in compression bandages. The skin should be washed carefully and dried. Nails are clipped and cleaned to avoid injury and inadvertent infection. Antibiotics include Diethylcarbamazine or DEC, which kills the microfilariae and also some adult worms. For areas outside of the United States, a combination of Albendazole and Ivermectin is generally used.
