Many civilizations used to live in EL Salvador including the Ollmecs, the Maya, and the Toltec Empire until the Spanish came and claimed the land for Spain. El Salvador gained independence in 1821. The country enjoys soccer. Main foods include rice, beans, and tortillas. The main agricultural products include coffee, sugar, corn, rice, shrimp, and beef. THere is frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity due to the country's many volcanoes.
The hot and humid areas are home to plants and animals such as palm trees, mango, coconut, and tamarind trees, armadillos, snakes, and iguanas. The mountains house orchids, ferns, spider monkeys, jaguars, anteaters, and many bird species.
El Salvador has a tropical climate with temperatures determined by elevation. There are pronounced wet and dry seasons. The Pacific lowlands are hot and humid, but the mountain areas and central plateau are more moderate.
