Eight Parts of Speech

An adjective describes a noun or a pronoun. Words like tall, quiet, and neat are adjectives.

An adverb tells something about a verb, adjective, or another adverb. It also tells when and how. Words like gentley, easily, and fast are adverbs.

A verb expresses an action or a state of being. Words like is, are, run, and jump are types of verbs.

A pronoun is a word used in the place of nouns. Words like I, me, you, he, and she are types of pronouns.

A preposition shows how a noun is related to some other word in the sentence. Words like on, over, and near are prepositions.

An interjection shows emotion or surprise. Words like Wow!, Oh!, and Yikes! are types of interjections.

A conjunction connects words of groups of words. Words like and, but, or, and because are conjunctions.
