[2016] Alyssa Berglund: Egypt History- King Tut

Egypt History

King Tut's full name was Tutankhaten which means " living image of Aten." He then changed his own name to Tutankhamen which means "the living image of Amun." Instead of these longs names he is now been known as King Tut.

King Tut is mostly known because of his intact tomb that was found in 1922. Tut was buried in a tomb in the Valley of the Kings, he was mummified which was the traditional way of the pharoahs. After his death he was nearly forgotten until 1922. Inside his chamber some artifacts of his journey were found such as, oils, perfumes, toys, jewlery, and statues of gold and ebony. There were also murials painted on the wall.

King Tut was the 12th King of the 18th Egyptian Dynasty. He was in power from 1332 to 1323 B.C.E. When Tut was born ancient egypt was going through great social and political uproar. Tut's father, Akhenaten had forbidden the worship of many gods and wanted worship to be focused on Aten who was the god of the sun. King Tut's father put all his effort into the religious transititon and neglected to focus on domestic and foreign affairs. Akhenaten was in reign for 17 years and once he died Tut took over at the age of nine and also got married that year. King Tut reversed his fathers decree to worship Aten and went back to the traditional polytheistic beliefs. Tut restored better relations with all of ancient egypt. His goal was to restore the old order in hope that the gods would once again look favorably on Egypt.
