Edwin Hubble

Edwin Powell Hubble is known for determining that there are other galaxies in the universe beyond the Milky Way and for observing that the universe is expanding at a constant rate.

"Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science" -Edwin Hubble

Edwin Hubble was born on November 20, 1889 in Marshfield, Missouri. He died of a spontaneous blood clot in his brain, Cerebral Thrombosis, on September 28, 1953 in San Marino, California.

Other than his discovery of that there are more galaxies out there, he also discovered that the loss in frequency observed in the spectra of light from other galaxies increased in proportion to a particular galaxy's distance from earth. He won the Bruce Medal in 1938, the Franklin Medal in 1939,the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Societry in1940, and the Legion of Merit in 1940. Also, he discovered asteroid 1373 Cincinnati on August 30, 1935.

Edwin Hubble studied at the University of Chicago where he concentrated on mathematics, astronomy, and philosophy, which led to a bachelor of Science degree in 1910. He then spent three years at The Queen's College, Oxford and studied law, literature, and spanish, which led to him getting a Master's degree. Hubble worked at the Ordnance Department in Aberdeen, Md. and the Mount Wilson Observatory.
