Edward St John Gorey was born in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. He was a self-taught artist and writer, though he did attend Harvard University, receiving a degree in French. Mr Gorey's highly recognizable illustrations and slightly eerie stories have delighted both children and adults for many, many years. Mr Gorey was an avid fan of the ballet; when he lived in New York he attended every single performance of the New York Ballet. He later moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he lived with his several cats. He received a Tony Award in 1978 for Best Costume, and was also famous for his animated introduction to the PBS program "Mystery!"
