John Dewey was born on October 20, 1959 in Vermont. As a child, Dewey always excelled in his academics, propelling his enrollment t the University of Vermont at the age of 15. Dewey took an interest in philosophy and psychology while attending college and graduated second in his class at 19 years old. Following graduation, he taught high school in Pennsylvania for two years. Dewey then enrolled in graduate school in 1884, where he received his Doctorate degree in Philosophy and Psychology at John Hopkins University. This degree led him to become a professor at the University of Michigan where he developed many of his educational philosophies. During his time in Michigan, he married and had seven children. During his educational career, he adopted many of his beliefs through his experiences as an educator and philosopher. To test his theories on education, he founded several schools; including the prestigious University of Elementary School at the University of Chicago. Owing to his extensive research in education and psychology, Dewey became one of the most well-known educational reformers in the 20th century. He published more than 1,000 works, including essays, books, and articles on his philosophies and attitudes towards education.
