Edgar Allan Poe helped to change the face of literature. Poe was one of the first authors to write horror and detective stories. Edgar Allan Poe was also one of the first critics to focus on style and structure of a literary work. Edgar Allan Poe has influenced many writers into following in his footsteps and writing horror stories. Steven King and Clive Barker are two of the most well known authors who followed Poe's footsteps in the horror genre. The horror genre is a large genre today and we have Poe to thank for being at the forefront of this style.

Edgar Allan Poe's greatest achievement today is the Raven. Although, Edgar only got 13 cents for the Raven when he sold it, it is still his greatest known work. Another of Poe's freatest achievments was the poem "Last Night" which was his first known poem that he wrote when he was only 15.

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809. His father left him when he was born and his mother died of tuberculosis when he was only two. Edgar was sent to live with John Allan in Richmond. Edgar grew up and had many hardships with his family, and dropped out of multiple schools. Edgar Allan Poe died on October 7, 1849. He was not famous until after his died, although he did publish many books.
