The drug was created in 1912, but it has not been ingested by humans until in the 1970’s in the USA , so it has been around for 103 years.It was originally created by Mannish and Jacobsohn who are scientists that work for a German pharmaceutical company called Merck, however it was later rediscovered by an American pharmacist named Dr.Alexander Shulgin. MDMA was banned in the United States in 1985 when the US Drug Enforcement Agency added it to schedule 1 of its list of controlled substances. It was deemed to have no medical use and a high potential for abuse. Other countries, including New Zealand, soon followed, and MDMA is illegal in most countries of the world.

According to the 2007 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, about 12.4 million Americans aged 12 or older tried Ecstasy at least once in their lives, representing 5% of the US population in that age group.Results of the 2007 survey indicated that 2.3% of eighth graders, 5.2% of tenth graders and 6.5% of twelfth graders had tried Ecstasy at least once and have had an overdose of it. 92% of those who begin using Ecstasy later turn to other drugs including marijuana, amphetamines, cocaine and heroin.
